Car Hire

Car hire is often part of a traveller’s life. You might arrive at a destination by air and find that you cannot rely on public transport. A rental car may also be necessary in cases where someone’s car has been damaged or written-off in an accident. In such a case, the person would use a rental car in the meantime.

There are several large rental car fleets that hire out their cars at a fee for a period ranging from several hours to several weeks. There are always a lot of conditions enclosed in the fine print. Some companies will not allow drivers below a certain age to hire their cars. There is usually also a mileage limitation: any mileage incurred above the allowed amount is charged for by the kilometre. The car must also be returned in the same condition. Fees may be incurred to repair a damaged vehicle.

Payment is usually by credit card. This affords the rental company more assurance that the renter can be found and allows them to draw funds as necessary to repair damage. Upon collecting the vehicle, a hold of several thousand Rand may be imposed on the renter’s credit account. This is lifted again after the car has been returned.

Car rental outlets are usually found in towns and cities along busy routes and at airports. A car rented from one outlet can usually be handed back at any other outlet of the same company.

Different classes of car are available for hiring. The very basic city runabouts with engine sizes around 1.3-litres are usually the cheapest, but several classes are available above that, including the ever-popular 1.6-litre sedan with air conditioning. Usually, all rental units are fitted with radios. There is also an executive car rental division at every major car hire company, that allows its members to rent executive class cars.
