The tour operator came into being to combine the tour and travel components of a holiday for travellers who do not have the time or knowledge to arrange their own holidays, especially far from home. These combination services are then all presented at one price.

Tour operators often negotiate specials accommodation and travel fares due to the advantage they have in the industry by numbers of people that make use of their services. They also make arrangements in far-flung places on behalf of their client. Their local knowledge in terms of currency, language and customs.

Tour operators are often able to get a competitive edge by arranging packages that take tourists to places that would have been to difficult or expensive to visit, or too laborious to organize. Their leverage once again comes from the number of interested people that make these packages worthwhile.
